As part of participation in the 2013 Solar Decathlon supported by the Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Team Las Vegas has been selected as one of 20 teams to compete in the international competition to design and build an approximately 800 square foot home that will aim to be net zero energy. The home will be constructed and tested at the 2013 Solar Decathlon competition at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine, Calif. The design integrates sustainability into the built environment and incorporates all of the high-tech opportunities available (smart walls, smart ECS interfaces, solar thermal, PV, etc.), without focusing the design solely on these systems.
Team Las Vegas
Team Las Vegas consists of students and faculty from Architecture, Engineering, Business, and Communications. The two-year effort will be integrated into various education programs at UNLV, including the Solar and Renewable Energy Minor and Renewable Energy Graduate Certificates (both supported by NV Energy), the David G. Howryla Design-Build Laboratory (supported by Mr. Howryla), the Mendenhall Innovation Center (supported by the Mendenhall family), and the Engineering Senior Design courses (supported by Fred and Harriet Cox).
