The UNLV Renewable Energy Program awards graduate assistantships to highly qualified master's and doctoral students pursuing studies in a variety of fields.
Applications are being accepted through May 18, 2012, for Renewable Energy Programs Graduate Assistantships under the direction of Dr. Thomas Piechota, Associate Vice President for Interdisciplinary Research. To be eligible for consideration as a RENEW GA, the student must have an academic interest in or background in one of the following areas of renewable energy:
- Energy Efficiency
- Biofuels
- Electrical Systems
- Solar Energy
- Building Design
- Renewable Energy Policy
- Wind Energy
- Economic Analysis
- Geothermal Energy
- Mechanical Systems
Students will have the opportunity to work closely with faculty in their major program as well as the Office of Urban Sustainability Initiatives to conduct research on and promote renewable energy topics.
The deadline for the application form and associated materials to be submitted via email is close of business Friday, May 18, 2012 to: donna.morell@unlv.edu. The application form and personal essay must be submitted as Word documents. All remaining application materials must be sent as one PDF document.
Funding
- $18,000 annual stipend for 12 months for doctoral students
- $15,600 annual stipend for 12 months for master's degree students.
- RENEW GAs are appointed on an annual basis. The positions are renewable.
- Out-of-state tuition is waived.
- Up to 18 credits/year of tuition is paid (Fall and Spring)
- Up to 6 credits of Summer Term is paid
- Fees and health insurance are paid in full
Eligibility
- Applicants must be admitted to graduate standing or in the process of applying to a UNLV graduate program. The RENEW GA application does not constitute formal application for admission to UNLV. Applicants must also complete an application to a graduate degree program.
Application Steps
- To be eligible for consideration as a RENEW GA, applicants must log into or create an account in the Graduate College Apply Yourself (AY) Application System, select the Graduate Assistantship Application option, select Fall 2012 as the term, and select Urban Sustainability Initiatives as the Graduate Assistant Department. The AY online assistantship application must be completed prior to submission of the RENEW GA application form.
- Submit via email a RENEW GA application form; a one-page personal essay; letters from three references; GRE scores (if applicable); and college transcripts. See application form for further details.
- The application form and personal essay must be submitted as Word documents. All remaining application materials must be sent as one PDF document.
Responsibilities
- All RENEW GA responsibilities will be assigned by the student’s academic department and the Office of Interdisciplinary Research in accordance with Graduate College regulations. These duties include research, educational, and/or community outreach services.
- Students are strongly encouraged to enroll in Summer Term to maintain their student status.
Deadline and Selection Process
- The deadline to submit a complete application package is close of business, Friday, May 18, 2012.The RENEW GA application package must be submitted via email only to: donna.morell@unlv.edu
- A RENEW GA Selection Committee will review application packages and select recipients. Interviews will be required of finalists (phone interviews for out-of-state applicants). Notification will occur approximately June 1.
