The Carbon Footprint Project aims to calculate the emissions produced directly and indirectly by the activities of the UNLV campus, and the results will be used as a baseline to quantify progress made by the university towards climate neutrality.
The project is part of the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Inventory, a preliminary step in implementing the American College and University President's Climate Commitment. Conducting the inventory was a recommendation made by UNLV's Sustainability Task Force in June 2008.
Heading the Effort
The effort is headed by two undergraduate interns, Ilonka Zlatar and Sterling McKay, who are officers of the Sierra Student Coalition. The SSC is the on-campus student environmental organization that initiated the establishment of the Sustainability Task Force and the signing of the president's climate commitment.
